Ear Anatomy


The ear is a vital organ of our body. It helps us to hear any sound. In other sense the ear is a receiving organ of sound energy and carries it into the brain cell and gives us the sense of hearing. So the knowledge of ear anatomy is quite essential for the medical practitioners as well as the students who are going to give the treatment of any diseases related with ear.





In the practice of homeo- magnate therapy the proper knowledge of the different parts of the ear is also quite essential. But it should be kept in mind that the ear is not only related to hearing but also works some vital balancing work for our head as well as our body. The ear is made up of three main parts called the external ear, the middle ear and the internal ear. The external ear and the middle ear are concerned entirely with hearing. The internal ear has a cochlear part concerned with hearing and a vestibular part provides proper information to the brain regarding the position and the movements of head.
The part of the ear that is seen on the surface of the body is anatomically speaking the auricle or pinna, which we in general called the ear. Leading in words from the auricle there is a tube called the external acoustic meatus. The auricle and external acoustic meatus together form the external ear. The inner end the external acoustic meatus is closed by a thin membranous diaphragm called the tympanic membrane. This membrane separates the external acoustic meatus from the middle ear.
In the study of ear anatomy we find that the middle ear is a small space placed deep within the petrous part of the temporal bone which is known as tympanum. Medially the medial ear is closely related to parts of the internal ear. The cavity of the middle ear is continuous with that of the nasopharynx two-way passage called the auditory tube. Within the cavity of the middle ear there are these small bones that are collectively called the ossicles of the ear.

In the form of a cavity the internal ear is within the petrous temporal bone having a very complex shape. The central part of the bone cavity is called the vestibule. The ad is a spiral shaped cavity continuous with the front of the vestibule is the bony cochlea. In posterior position the vestibule is continuous with three semicircular canals.





To define ear anatomy we may say that sound waves travelling through air the ears. Waves striking the tympanic membrane produce vibrations in it. These vibrations are transmitted to the chain of ossicles present in the middle ear is the internal ear. In the cochela a specialised end organs act as transducers which convert the mechanical vibrations into nervous impulses. These impulses travel through the cochlear part of the vestibular cochlear nerve to reach the brain. But the actual perception of sound takes place in the auditory areas in the cerebral cortex.
